Tamiya 1/6 Scale Suzuki GSX1100S Katana Kit
Held every two years in Cologne West Germany, one of the most well-known motorbike shows worldwide; the 1980 show is definitely among the most unforgettable. One reason was Honda's first-time release of their CX500 turbo; another was the unveiling of Suzuki's GSX1100S "Katana," Japanese for sword. The advanced engine techniques of the Honda CX500 and the Katana's aggressive and modern body style—which deviated from conventional traditional motorcycle styling— attracted attention. Although the Katana GSX1100S design delighted the many thousands of viewers, almost everyone believed it was only for show and the production technique would be rather different. With minor engine and running gear changes, Suzuki debuted the production Katana during the summer of 1981 with almost exactly the same body style observed at the Cologne exhibition. Many wind tunnel tests have shown that the body style, derived from the genius of Mr. Hans A. Muth of West Germany, who spent much time guaranteeing driver comfort in his design, proves out. Research on the ideal drivers position drove all of the styling; the rearward placed backsteps and unusual tank design were not done only for the pleasing jet age look. For maximum airflow around the rider and the bike, large capacity fuel tank and small fairing were combined. The bike is most noticeable for its design, but every component is of quality. Engine runs 16 valves in an air cooled, parallel 4 of 1075cc. The engine produces 111 hp with the special Suzuki TSCC (Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber). This great power converts into a road speed of 230 k/h and its distinctive body form keeps it steady even at these high speeds. Along with a 750cc model for the European market, Suzuki is shipping a 1000cc Katana GSX1000S to the American market. Requests from Japanese fans inspired Suzuki to also introduce a 750cc Katana GSX750S to their line of business.
